This work is a collection of three essays and a playscript. The prefatory essays lay out the progression of my thinking as a “translator”—a term I use under erasure because I no longer think it serves as an accurate indicator of what “translators” actually contend with and do—while the play itself is a “translation” of Federico García Lorca’s Mariana Pineda. Translation process research (TPR) efforts seem at times unconcerned with the theoretical foundations they need to interpret their results. A pervasive theoretical approach within TPR has been the mind-as-computer view. This approach has fostered both mechanistic and functional explanations of the translation process, including semantic notions of meaning, unrealistic constructs of the mental lexicon, and reified notions of equivalence. The author examines the codicological and textological features of ms. 1039 of the National Library in Sofia with special attention to the history of the manuscript, its protograph and alleged archetype. In addition to the individual characteristics of ms. 1039, its context is considered as well – miscellanies that preserve similar content are analyzed in regard to their origin and their textual grouping. Abstract: Sporadic references to the European avant-garde movements can be found in the early phase of Þórbergur Þórðarson’s career. Of special interest are the apparent links between such references and the Icelandic author’s participation in the Esperanto movement.
